Applying deicing salt to snowy roads keeps motorists safe. Studies show they prevent thousands of traffic accidents each year in Michigan alone.

But road salt can really harm the environment. When snow and ice melt on Michigan roadways, their water trickles through storm drains and into lakes, streams, wetlands, and drinking water aquifers. They bring an estimated 450,000 tons of salt with them. That increase in salinity can damage aquatic ecosystems, toxify water, and degrade infrastructure.

Steering away from salt applications isn’t an option. But scientists, entrepreneurs, and state officials are looking for practices that might reduce its environmental impact.

In our Friday Capitol Connection webinar, join water policy director Megan Tinsley and Christe Alwin from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes & Energy. They will set the scene on road salt’s necessity and risks, then provide solutions that protect our environment and protect us from vehicle wrecks.
