Grand-Raisin Conservation Community Fall Wrap-Up: Walker Tavern and the Oak Savannas of Southern Michigan

Celebrate the coming of fall with the Grand-Raisin Conservation Community! This will be an opportunity to connect with fellow stewards and outdoor enthusiasts, to learn about the Grand-Raisin Conservation Community and the work that we do, and participate in a discussion about Walker Tavern and the Oak Savannas of southern Michigan. Light refreshments and snacks will be provided.

Program:

  • Greeting, introductions, and orientation
  • The Stewardship Network / Grand-Raisin Conservation Community introduction
  • Welcome by Laurie Perkins, MDNR Site Historian
  • Re-inhabiting Michigan’s glacial landscape
  • Walker Tavern and Michigan’s westward settlement
  • An ecological description and interpretation of Southern Michigan’s historical landscape
  • A vision for a Walker Tavern Oak Openings interpretive trail – monarch oaks, sleeping seed banks, and the impacts of fire suppression
  • Adjournment, networking, and walk preparation
  • Guided Home Walk – Walker Tavern Trail starting at 3pm
